Bergius Botanical Garden Expands Its Smart Irrigation Infrastructure

Bergius Botanical Garden continues to modernize and expand its irrigation infrastructure. The development is particularly challenging due to the garden’s rocky terrain and historically established environment, where major construction work—such as trenching for pipes and electrical wiring—is often highly troublesome or sometimes even illegal.

Traditionally, these limitations resulted in significant manual labor, requiring gardeners to set up and manage irrigation for each watering event individually. This time-consuming process reduced the amount of time available for other essential horticultural tasks.
Since 2021, IRRIOT has been the selected technology provider, retrofitting modern wireless precision irrigation control onto the garden’s existing irrigation network. This approach has enabled the garden to modernize its irrigation operations without disrupting its unique landscape and heritage environment.
Today, the garden continues to expand its IRRIOT wireless control infrastructure, with the long-term goal of achieving fully automated, sensor-driven irrigation.
The latest project focuses on the garden’s new entrance avenue, featuring drip-irrigated apple trees and flowerbeds stretching along both sides of the pathway. 
According to Tore Fahlström, who is responsible for the project, the most significant benefit of the IRRIOT system at Bergius Botanical Garden is the substantial reduction in manual labor required from the gardening staff.
“To fully benefit from the IRRIOT system, new projects should incorporate drip irrigation combined with sensor-based control,” says Tore Fahlström.
He notes that the primary challenge is encouraging traditionally minded gardeners to trust automation and the accuracy of field sensors.
“The challenge is to convince traditional gardeners to trust the automation and the precision of the field sensors.”
As the garden continues its transition toward data-driven irrigation management, each new installation demonstrates how modern wireless technology can be successfully integrated into historic landscapes while improving efficiency, conserving water, and reducing maintenance requirements.
